2010 Detroit Tigers Season Preview

Despite being one game away from the playoffs last season, the Tigers had a busy off season, dumping some old veterans with big salaries and deciding to go with some young talent in the lineup.

Justin Verlander was locked into a long term deal and the team signed Jose Valverde to be the new closer. They are looking for Rick Porcello to improve on his 14 win rookie season and for trade acquisition Max Scherzer to replace the production of Edwin Jackson.

Johnny Damon is the big name offensive signing, and he should provide solid veteran leadership. Part of the 3 team trade with the Yankees and D-Backs that got Max Scherzer for Edwin Jackson also involved old leadoff man Curtis Granderson going to the Yankees with new leadoff man Austin Jackson heading to Detroit. The 23 year old Jackson has looked like the real deal, and if he and new 2B Scott Sizemore can produce, expect this lineup to score a lot of runs.

I expect this team to be a notch below the White Sox and will battle the Twins for the 2nd spot in the division. If they can stay healthy and get a little luck they will be in the playoff hunt.
